PURE... does it again. A collection worth every penny hidden in the old Memphis ice box. It showcases blues classics from across the spectrum and is certainly geared to introducing someone to the genre.

For those who are true blues fans, this CD is pretty much unnecessary. Most of these tunes, they will already have.As a result, I am going to address it in relation to someone seeking a good sampler, that has not yet discovered the wonderful world of blues. For those individuals, I find this CD to be woefully lacking. The only songs here from B.B. King, John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters are those that have already been played to death, or sampled on just about every other compilation CD issued. Some better/additional songs, showing these legends versatility would have been most appropriate.Even more annoying is the inclusion of flashes in the pan, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Jonny Lang, and Susan Tedeschi. Who will remember these blues-wannabe rock singers in a few years anyway? I guess this is just another advertising ploy by the record companies to try to sell their CD's while they can, but there are far more deserving/representative artists that should have been included. Where are Sonny Boy Williamson, Charlie Musselwhite, Robert Lockwood, and of course, Robert Johnson?

I actually bought this for my Mom's 100th birthday, yikes! She is a true lover of real "down and dirty" blues. The CD lived up to our expectations when we played it at her party...except she had a hard time hearing it., So, my brother gladly offered to take it home because he said it was the best blues CD. We have a lot of musicians in our family and we all love and respect real blues. I will be ordering another copy of this CD for myself and my husband.

So, what do we have here? An absolutely stonking compilation of various forms of 'da blooz' ranging from the 50s right through to the turn of the century. This comp has been put together by people who appreciate the music in its various forms. Big thanks to Universal for this 20-track offering. It starts with an outtake from 'Layla' -Mean old World, Eric on acoustic and Duane on acoustic slide, then Jonny Lang, a 15-year old! with his take on 'Good Morning Little Schoolgirl. The quite precocious talent of Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Shame Shame Shame, recorded when he was just 18, but sounding like he's been around forever is followed by a live version of Flood Down in Texas from Stevie Ray Vaughan Montreaux '82. Robert Cray's Smoking Gun is next, then Susan Tedeschi with her self-penned 'Just Won't Burn' from her debut album of 1999, sounding not unlike Janis Joplin. [In 2000 she opened for BB King's concerts]An evil take on 'Little Red Rooster' from Luther Allinson [on the Motown label!] is followed by an early Buddy Guy version of Willie Dixon's 'Let Me Love You Baby' then on to the Allman Bros live 'Statesboro Blues' from the Fillmore. Now it gets really interesting. The rest of the 11 tracks were recorded between 1952 and 1969 featuring the giants of the original blues artists. Howlin' Wolf/Spoonful, Muddy Waters/Hoochie Coochie Man, Freddie King/Have You Ever Loved a Woman, Big Mama Thornton/Hound Dog, Jimmy Reed/Big Boss Man, John Lee Hooker/One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer, Koko Taylor/Wang Dang Doodle, Albert King/Born Under A Bad Sign, Etta James/Tell Mama, Bobby 'Blue' Bland/Turn on Your Love Light, and last but in no way least BB King with the heart-breakingly beautiful 'The Thrill Is Gone.A wonderful, wonderful album, full of surprises and a credit to all the artists on it. Buy with confidence.
