Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble - Live At

Amazon.ca

In 1990, Texas bluesman Stevie Ray Vaughan was just emerging from a long period in which drugs had taken their toll: the previous year's In Step album was the first he had made drug free, and the results were a marvel. But then, after sharing a stage with Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, and Eric Clapton, he boarded a helicopter to Chicago. It crashed, and the career of one of the great blues guitarists was ended.

Rewind to 1983 and here is Stevie Ray at the beginning of his fame, his first album with his backing band Double Trouble, Texas Flood, having just been released to critical and popular acclaim. The venue is the El Mocambo club in Toronto, a dark, smoky joint with a laid-back but appreciative clientele. Vaughan, drummer Chris Layton, and bassist Tommy Shannon share the tiny stage. The guitarist, bedecked in trademark hat and alligator-skin boots, is pale of complexion, sweating from the heat and physical exertion, and physically much smaller than Shannon, who towers over him. But Vaughan dominates, as much by the magnetism of his flamboyant personality as his guitar playing. And what playing: by turns fiery, funky, then limpid and surprisingly graceful. Here is an authentic blues artist captured in the throes of living through his music. At this early stage in his career he was still very much in thrall to Jimi Hendrix (the flower-power shirt gives it away), as covers of "Voodoo Chile" and "Third Stone from the Sun" (the latter a Hendrix-inspired guitar-abuse session) indicate. The highlight of the show, however, is his rendition of "Texas Flood," which turns out to be an amazing essay on the art of blues guitar. This is a raw, intimate, and spontaneous record of a one-time event. All fans of the blues will be grateful to those who had the foresight to capture it on film. --Mark Walker, Amazon.co.uk

If you a SRV fan this is a must-have. I think the crowd and even Tommy and Chris sometimes seemed surprised by his talent. Great concert in a small venue.

Great band that could play almost telepathically behind Stevie as they all liked the same music and united with the same vision. Stevie was the ultimate musician...he played with sensitivity and passion and anger and sadness, he covered all the emotions much like Jimi Hendrix did. There was a direct line from their emotions to their fingers and it's all evidenced here. Stevie displays his gift from start to finish and blows the audience away. Little did he know that this ultimately forgotten until his death gig would end up blowing people's minds for eternity. The video is great but it's still missing the yet unreleased Little Wing performance that may never see the light of day. There's not a day goes by that I don't miss SRV and wish he was still with us. He was truly one of the all time greats.

Great performance by one of the most under-rated artists. A virtual powerhouse of solid guitar playing. Recorded at the infamous elMocambo, it is hard to dislike anything about this DVD. A true gem Too bad Stevie died so young.

I absolutely loved this video; I hadn’t realized he performed at the el Macombo; I wish I had attended the show at the time. I guess this is second best to actually being there. And to find out that he/they performed without an actual set list is incredible. Enjoy!!

It is an older recording from July 1983 so may not benefit from newer breakthroughs in portable recording technology. But anyone who appreciates the incredible talent and skill of SRV should have this DVD for their collection. Crank it to 10 open a beer and enjoy a special moment in Blues history......

I remember watching a rock programme on British TV some years back in which they compiled a list of the ten-best rock guitarists of all time. Stevie Ray wasn't even on there. I guess hardly anyone in Britain had heard of him. Predictably, Clapton came second and Jimi Hendrix first. Soon after this I discovered SRV when an American friend gave me a Couldn't Stand The Weather CD. After that I bought a couple of live CDs having read on the internet about his stunning live performances. What can I say? Magic? Genius? Words can't capture it. I'd never heard anything like it before. I don't think music had ever moved me to tears before. It soon became quite obvious to me that Stevie Ray should have been at the top of that list, above even the great Hendrix. If you find this hard to believe, compare live performances of Hendrix, Clapton and SRV playing Voodoo Chile (at different times of course!). Hendrix is incredible and deserves to be considered one of the best ever, but SRV somehow reaches an even higher level. So let that list stand, with Hendrix at the top. But that's the second division. Above them we have Stevie Ray Vaughan, in a league all by himself. He could sing too. They used to say that Clapton was God. What that makes Stevie Ray I don't know. Well I do know: Stevie Ray Vaughan was the best rock and blues guitarist that ever lived, and always will be. Live At The El Mocambo captures him on top form in 1983. The best of the best. Prepare to be moved.

Bought this as a Christmas gift for my husband, who is a SRV fan. I read about the poor video quality and some negative comments about the dvd, but ordered it anyway. Perhaps those comments were made by people expecting too much from an 80's concert, 'cause for us it was exactly what we were wanting to hear and watch. The quality is great considering the year it was filmed in, the audio is marvelous, and the dvd works perfectly. The concert is amazing and you can't find the complete version nowhere else, so this is a valuable material to own.It came new, wrapped in plastic, with a standard shiny paper cover and the disc is printed (not a sticker). Just like any other dvd. It didn't have the little booklet old dvd's used to include, but I guess it's just not necessary for this one. The additional features include great interviews and photos. My husband and I loved everything about this dvd.100% RECOMMEND!
