Disassembly and Assembly Method:

As some other reviewers have noted, this requires some elbow grease. I purchased it knowing darn well that re-profiling a metal object by manually filing it takes work (I do this when I sharpen knives, and before I went electric, I put in several hours of manual hand grinding).This unit has two sharpening "stones", presumably steel coated in diamond dust. There is a course one, and a fine one. I started with the course one and spent about an hour grinding the skate blade into shape. It takes some effort but once the initial profile has been established, future sharpening will not require this much work (unless someone walks across a paved parking lot with the skates on their feet). The plastic keeps things in line as you sharpen, which makes it far less frustrating.Sharpening tips:As one sharpens, roll the sharpening stone so to even out wear. Note that they can get hot so be careful if using bare fingers. A tip to know when to stop with the course stone is that the valley on the blade edge should be completely fresh, free of dirt and rust along the length of the sharpened surface.Once the profile has been established with the course side, flip the unit over and hone with the fine stone (again rolling it on occasion to even out wear).Once done, there will be a burr on the edges of the blade. Either purchase a flat stone or a ceramic stones specially for this task. If you know what you are doing, it can be done with a knife sharpening steel or sharpening stone as well, but don't round the edge.As noted, expect to spend some time, especially the first time because the factory grind is unlikely to match the profile of this sharpener, therefore one must work to re-profile the edge.If you are not prepared to spend the time, get something different.

I don't own skates but love to go skating with my son when we go travelling to cold places. Rental skates are always so dull and being a pretty good skater, it's the most frustrating thing in the world. This device is perfect for getting an edge and being able to skate (stop). Probably not good enough for serious hockey players but great for rental skates.

sharpened my child's skate just enough to get an edge. I would not rely on it for any ice hockey. Purchase y ceramic tool or flat stone to debur

We only skate at our community lake and this works great for that.
