This Irwin auger bit powered right through the 4x4 posts I used on a landscaping project. Drilled a total of about 50 holes all the way through the posts. The last one was as smooth and easy as the first. I can definitely recommend this product.

I needed to drill a hole just over 5 inches into some hardwood, so I got this. It seems like it may be just slightly oversized but maybe the bits I used before to start the hole were undersized. None-the-less it was close and fit in the hole, just it was a bit tight.I needed a flat bottom but I couldn't find a thin enough extension, nor a forstner bit of the appropriate length (under $100), so I bought this, and ground down the screw, leaving some threads to give it a chance to finish the hole.Clamped in my drill press it was able to finish the hole, making powder more than shavings, but the hole was exactly what I needed and it did it w/o having to be brought out to clear the hole. The 2nd hole, again started with a forstner bit and extended with a twist bit, also came out perfect. It does seem a bit rough, and I can see why another reviewer experienced clogging, but the other 2 bits I used also had to be cleaned with a pick, so I don't ding it for that.It was a bit pricy for 2 hole, but I expect at the worst I can start holes with my other bits, and then get long holes with this. The shaft has flats for tightening it in a chuck, so that's good, especially on something this long.

The little cutting slot that begins the helix gets gummed up with woodMight be fine for blowing holes through kiln dried lumber, but with wet pressure treated boards it gets about 2" deep before stoppingThen you need to use a utility knife to clean all that out. If the bit is really hot, the PTL stuff is like glued in there. Tough to get out.I only bought it because my paddle bits are only 6" long and I'm going through 7" of wood.Ultimately, I did most of the hole with a plain dumb drill bit, then finished the last inch with this cutter, cleaning it out after every hole. Now that this project is done, I'm pitching it. At least it didn't cost a lot.

I like Irwin drill bits and that is what I purchase when I need a different size or a replacement for worn bits.Irwin drill bits are very well made and last a Long Time. I have used this bit for drilling in wood, metal, and plastic as well as an auger when I needed to put a stake in the ground. You need to use a pickaxe in our yard as the ground is so hard.
