I wasn't sure about the grit, but it is perfect for stropping a knife, after using a stone, and before using the fine green compound.

I bought this to use on my stropping belt when sharpening my knives. It works really good and should be enough here for my kids, kids, kids!

I would have given 6 stars if I could. It is coarser than the green one and this is exactly what I wanted. The green is very fine and its time consuming to jump from 8k stone to it. The red seems like a perfect intermediary.I never used it but I understood from the comments that the white one is in the middle between red and green from THIS BRAND (Rouge).

I also bought a buffing wheel for my bench grinder. Either the buffing wheel is of poor quality or the rouge is too hard on the wheel but the buffing wheel is shredding while in use.

I use this for sharpening my knife. Different knives, different steels, require different techniques for a fine edge. I use this on my Emerson knife which uses a high carbon stainless steel - emphasis on ability to take an edge versus rust resistance. If the blade is getting dull, I put most of the edge on it with a ceramic sharpening stone. Then I finish it up with this buffing compound rubbed into a piece of leather or cardboard. The buffing compound is sort of crayon like - that's not a good description but I can't think of a better one - so it can be rubbed into/onto non corrugated cardboard or leather. It's not dry or powdery. Anyway after putting a sharp edge on the knife with the ceramic, a few back strokes of the knife on the rouge coated cardboard or leather will put a shaving edge on the knife.

I reviewed the green one the same way. I can't tell much difference between this and that one, but I think the abrasive particles are supposed to be a tiny bit smaller. I got this for trying to make some strops and learn about sharpening. I could never get the leather things to work. I think I used leather that was too soft. I mostly use card-stock taped to a granite tile now, and I load the card-stock with this compound. It sticks to the paper and does a fine job of sharpening. I tried a few grades of compound from Porter Cable at the hardware store and found it to be dry and crumbly. I can't get that stuff to stick to my paper. This stuff is much better.

When one thinks of rouge normally what comes to mind is the product some women wear, not this one. This is to be applied sparingly with a buffing wheel in order to produce a shine or smoother finish on metals. Works great on brass that does not have a lacquer finish on it. There are other similar products that come in different "grits" for similar purposes. I would purchase this again when needed but when used correctly a little bit goes a long way.
