I'm brand new to wood working. I shaped my first mallet handle with this spokeshave today. While it was flawed out of the box (large chip out of the blade), it still worked fine and I used it as it was out of the box. If you are willing to spend 30 minutes sharpening the blade I'm sure it would be pretty good. For the price, you can't complain and you should expect to have to put a little elbow grease into any tool at this price point to make it better.
