A heavy lead-guitar sound was abandoned for an intimate setup of acoustic and slide guitars, bass, sax, flute and percussion. Includes three unissued bonus performances from that night.

One of the most interesting things about JOHN MAYALL that I really truly love, is the way that he combines equipment to produce an outstanding sound in the studio or live sound. In the case of THE TURNING POINT, this latest LP, MAYALL HIRES a completely different set of studio musicians and then puts them together inan open studio environment such as the hollywood bowl ( just an example ) so that he can produce a suggested sound. It becomes a truly GREAT SOUND. I was blown away by the sound that he managed to put together for this disc and it truly was a great sounding LP. For those of you with a great sounding HI FI stereo I really suggest this LP. It is an amazing listen.

You are probably reading this review for one of two reasons: your grandmother or dad mentioned the Godfather of the British blues after his recent sad death at the age of 90 and Mayall piqued your interest or on John's death the old hands thought they might replace their old vinyl.Whichever, The Turning Point is an excellent place to start. Mayall was known for having excellent musicians who served their apprenticeship with the great man and then went on to be part of other major, influential bands. For example Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce (Cream), Peter Green and John McVie (Fleetwood Mac), Mick Taylor (The Rolling Stones), Jon Hismen, Dick Heckstall-Smith (Colosseum), Harvey Mandel and Larry Taylor (Canned Heat) and many, many more.On this album we find a tub-less line-up with Jon Mark (acoustic guitar), Johnny Almond (saxes/flute) and Stephen Thompson. It is a live album and the recording from 1969 - recorded at the Fillmore East and the sound quality is stunning. As always Mayall takes a relatively back seat and lets the other members take solos. The interplay between the band - particularly acoustic guitar and saxes is superb with Mayall's harmonica interspersed effectively. Outstanding musicianship and John's vocals are, as always, effective.Okay, that's for you newbies, but what about the old hands? Well like many of the John Mayall remasters they come with excellent extra tracks (and they ARE bonuses not penalties!) which are generally from the same sessions or concert. Here we have three superb bonus tracks taken from the same gig. They fit in perfectly and are of top-notch quality. So this is an essential purchase - unequivocally recommended. If this whets your appetite then I would further heartily recommend Blues from Laurel Canyon, Bare Wires, Jazz Blues Fusion and A Hard Road to start. There are many, many more!Good luck and have fun!Robust stuff....? Not 'af!
