The Crown Prince of Dance earned his nickname long before he made "The Funky Chicken" all the rage of 1970s dance floors. Thomas instructs your feet in "Walking the Dog," your torso in "The Breakdown," your shaking booty in "The Push and Pull." Backed by the best musicians at Stax, Rufus transcends the novelty aspects of his songs to create timeless good times. The music on this CD explains how he got his other nicknames: The World's Oldest Teenager, and The Funkiest Man Alive. --Robert Gordon

I first got into RT when I got my hands on an old copy of WATTSTAX : The Living Word... it was some of the funkiest soul music I ever heard outside of a JB album...(though definitely in the JB school... ) - - So I went out and was lucky to find a copy of CROWN PRINCE OF DANCE for 5 bucks, which in my book had one of the coolest record album covers of all time... Recently, I finally got to see Wattstax and it was amazing to see him work the crowd... The man was not only funky, but hillarious... and the vibes are apparent on this great compilation... Each tune seems to take advantage of some new dance craze he's creating (though actually when you see the Wattstax movie its funny because its he who's making the stadium dance and practically riot... but as for himself... he's not really moving around that much. As you listen to his greatest hits however, you can't imagine anything but a mean lean JB dancing machine... Especially as you work your way midway through the album... this stuff is funky horn driven classic soul and what I like to call a SAMPLING DJs wet dream... the funk is there, and in answer to Rufus Thomas's question : Ain't I'm Clean... the answer is... heck yeah ! ! ! Crown Prince of Dance : RIP ! ! !
