This hand plane is one of Japanese traditional tools

One of the Japanese Tools

There are a couple of differences between Western tools and Japanese tools. In many cases, Japanese tools are lighter and simpler than Western ones because Japanese tools are minimally designed and there is no unnecessary waste. Nowadays, the Japanese tools has become a popular tool in wood-crafting around the world due to its high quality.

SUIZAN's hand plane is a small one that has one blade. It is simply composed of the wooden body and the blade. One blade plane is light to use and results in beautiful surfaces.

How to use a Japanese hand plane

How to Use

1. Hold a hand plane with both hands and pull towards you.

2. As your body weight moves, pull the hand plane towards you at the same time. There is no need to apply excess power.

How to adjust hand plane blade

How to Adjust The Blade

・To remove the blade, lightly tap the top corner of the body with a hammer.

・If either side of the blade comes out too much, tap lightly on the same side as the protruding blade.

・When placing the blade, tap the top of the blade lightly with a hammer; the blade should protrude about 0.002 to 0.008 inches (0.05 to 0.2 mm).

ATTENTION

Although the Japanese plane is not a hard tool to use, please be aware that if

- you are pulling in the opposite direction as the grain direction.

- the blade is protruding too much.

There is a possibility that the plane will not work well.

Beautiful little plane. The iron doesn’t look like it’s forged, more like stamped out of plate steel and it’s definitely not the kind where a Japanese smith has fused a high carbon steel piece onto a softer one. Nevertheless, right out of the box, it’s sharp enough to take fine shavings. After sharpening the iron and setting it properly, it’s even more of a joy to use.
