New Jersey native and California resident Trout is an established guitar star in Europe and he capitalizes on that fact on "Relentless," ripping through a live session of original material in front of an enthusiastic Amsterdam audience. Trout, as the title states, is a relentless guitarist with an aggressive and energetic style. On his seventh album he and his backing trio the Radicals deliver another solid, if admittedly sometimes less than sensational, exercise in well-played rocking blues, with the emphasis on rocking. Trout paid his blues dues working with John Lee Hooker, Canned Heat, and John Mayall but his hard and heavy sound is rooted in rock guitar showmanship. Fortunately he has the licks to keep it interesting, although when things get too frantic, such as on the overkill album closer "Mercy," it's difficult to discern the blues base of the music. Trout does slow down briefly, turning in the short acoustic tune "Lonely Tonight," but for the vast majority of the time the music is loud, lively, and barely blue. --Michael Point

I have followed this band since I first heard them on radio in 1998, both through purchase of their CD's and following them on tours through the midwest. This CD, being the band's first with a new line up on keyboards and drums joining Walter's long time bassist Jim Trapp, showcases the solid talents of the band along with Walter's songwriting and guitar playing ability. It also contains some of the "raw" aspects of a live recording and yet still captures some of the production qualities that made "Go the Distance" such a great CD.This work may well show a progression to a higher level for Walter's songwriting talents and the new line up may well elevate this band to the "headliner status" in the U.S. they richly deserve.Whether your taste runs more to the gritty power guitar of "I'm Tired", or to the almost haunting ballad "Jericho Road", there is something here for everyone. There is a quality to the music that makes this CD a personal favorite and a definite must have for any blues/rock fan.

Walter Trout keeps getting better with each release. On "Relentless", Trout gives us 14 original tunes and over 70 minutes that rock, in a blues way of course, from start to finish slowing down every now and again for a change of pace and to break any monotony. Trout's songs seem to be theme oriented and based upon his life experience as a traveling musician. The songs are in the vein of a Joe Bonamassa, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Gov't Mule or Jim Shuler and Monkey Beat. While all songs are new and original material, "Jericho Road", a radio friendly slow tune done in a southern rock fashion, sounds vaguely familiar. Nevertheless, it's 5 stars all the way and clearly one of the better releases this year.

This cd captures Walter at his absolute best. From start til finish you can really feel every song deep down, in every note Walter plays and every word he sings.A stand out track for me is "Cry If You Want To", a song which Walter wrote fo his son. It is beautiful and moving. "I'm Tired" is a powerful song with exciting guitar playing and strong backing. I love the way in which this cd has been recorded, capturing both the benefits of the studio and live performance. This is yet another outstanding release from Walter Trout and the Radicals. Relentless is a must have.

Although I am one of those so-called blues "purists" people talk about, makes me a now hard-won fan of Mr. Trout.Of course, great guitar work, good songs, especially because they are "originals" and come from the heart. Thanks for baring your soul to us through your music, Walter. Thoroughly enjoyable album which I have joyfully added to my Blues collection of CD's which gets frequent play.

I'm sitting here listning to Walter Trout's Relentless CD, and am just blown away! This guy is one of the finest guitar players I have ever heard, if not the finest! As a singer songwriter, he is in my opinion as good as the very best. There is not a bad cut on this disc and I love the way that they recorderd it, the soundstage is big and raw, a real live feel to it. If you are a fan of Walter Trout (and everyone should be!) you will have to have this disc. What a talent this guy is!! What a band! Get the disc, spread the word!!!!!

One cannot fathom the relentless part of Walter Trout's music, or the will to keep going after his falls and those of his bandmates. Besides roady jobs, he's a regular at a Huntington Beach music bar. One never could know who's going to show up for the one- two- three nighter gig. At first, after seeing WT play the circuit consecutive times, one would think WT's out of tune and songs and into a grind of repetition, but that isn't true at all. Perhaps he's better at remembering how to play the whole spectrum of music he's written or borrowed (covers) than most any other musician that doesn't play their whole catalog at ever sitting. The result certainly isn't boring; even while watching some drunk play a beer bottle (no sounds) to the tune of whatever WT is playing at the time. You'd think that WT was tired of the road, but they keep the gig going, no matter the location. To get the full scoop, one has to get the 14 or so cds and keep cranking them while driving down the road. In person, along with his players (local or not) the music gets right into your soul as if it were a RR track spike making its connection and pain known. Blues is around to mirror one's internal emotions, and the process leads to some relief from the downers and negativity, and then brightens the whole outlook after such concerts or renditions.Besides this album, I'd look into John Mayall's 'Behind the Iron Curtain', who has WT and Coco Montoya playing on it. It is very inspiring, and once you know who's playing what, you'll be after more of it. RELENTLESS- yeah that describes Walter Trout, and just about anybody doing the gig with him!!!

I'm new to Walter Trout's music. I've known about him for two decades but had none of his music until recently. 2017's Were All In This Together was my introduction. Highly recommend. Great album with great songs and cream of the crop guests on each track playing in the guests style . Not your typical guest albums where the songs are flat and forced and without feel. But that is a studio album with great production. The real test for a musician, singing and playing a three dimensional instrument is on the stage performing live without computer assistance and studio re-takes. WT and band pass with flying colors. Relentless is a live album that hits the gate running and doesn't let up until the last track. The band is in terrific form . 77 minutes of a great mix of hard edged Blues Rock songs delivered with energy and passion. High octane Blues Rock. Discover for yourself that WT is the Real Deal, but i suggest not to follow my example and wait two decades to do it. This album is a great place to start.
