This system solves that problem because your Mandrel shaft goes through the hollow live center. Your bushings Press against the center with Zero pressure on the Mandrel shaft. This mandrel works well, fitting the pen blanks and preventing chatter on my lathe as I turn them. I would buy it again. Two criticisms: the Morse Taper doesn't seem to actually conform to the Morse Taper spec which I have reviewed in my old Machinery's Handbook (fat old green reference book with specs on almost everything to do with machining and tools.) There is no "tang" on the end of the taper, so that when I back the tailstock's holder out using the screw handle, the taper doesn't get "popped" out like the old ones (built according to spec) do. It's not a big deal because I can jam my wrench or a flat gouge into the bit between the live center head and the tail stock body as I screw it backwards and it disengages, but I'd prefer it to be properly built. I measured the MT2 with my vernier caliper and the tapered part is fine. It's just missing the extended bit at the end.The second criticism is aimed at the hex set screw in the other end of the unit. I loosened it off but for the life of me I couldn't remove or reposition the rod it is supposedly holding. Not sure if it's just for decoration or not.But I do recommend this for the price and utility. It works fine.

I am new to pen turning and was unsure about what to get. This mandrel seems to work well, it seems strong and well built and then fact it comes with the mandrel saver is great. I was able to start turning pens for the first time like someone who knew what they were doing and I got great results.For turning 7mm slimline pens, I do not know why I would by anything else.Every one in the family is getting a pen for Christmas.

It works very well with my mini wood lathe. I've made a bunch of Koa Wood pens using the equipment. For the money, it was well worth it.

Given it's the 1st one I used, I bought it to use with my Jet Mid lathe to make the Rockler cigar kits, have not made any pens yet but I'm sure it would do the job.
