I found it nice to just top up when needed, but then some info came out that claimed these pre made solutions may harm the birds so I make my own cheaper and easy. One cup sugar, to 4 cups hot water and presto. They don't care if it's colored or not.

Poison for Hummingbirds! This product contains red coloring. Any bird expert will tell you it's poison for the Hummingbirds! Just use plain white sugar. White sugar only. Mix ratio 4 parts hot water to 1 part sugar. The hot water will help to dissolve the sugar. Store any unused solution in a jar in the fridge. The red feeder with the bright yellow ports us all you need to attract the little guys. Not food coloring.

I like the idea of mixing just the right amount to keep the solution fresh, not only it is economical but it’s a nice way to prevent contamination of the solution. Great way to enjoy these beautiful creatures.
