Notes From San Francisco (2CD)

I have most of his recorded stuff. Always a treat, both live and studio. This is a double set with both studio and live.Glad this finally got released! Rory Gallagher music is always welcome in our home.What isn't welcome, and happens with way too much frequency, is the condition of the jewel cases when received. Due to Amazon's weak packing, nearly all of our jewel cases are damaged. We once returned a package of two CD's and received too more in worse shape than what we sent back.So now we don't bother. We also don't buy music on Amazon very much anymore. So 5 stars for music and 2 stars for Amazon shipping.

Great album. Lots of fancy stuff comes from Elliot Mazer. Five songs from Photo Finish done in absolutely different ways. Very good Dutch pressing.

Rory Gallagher never made a bad album, some were just better than others. The studio half of this two cd set is not bad, its average. And there's the rub. Rory was never average and always delivered more than you could reasonably expect.The studio half of this two cd set is entertaining enough it just never really ignites.Its not hard to hear why Rory shelved the project. It has a commercial sheen than smooths out some of Rory's best assests, his impassioned vocals and inspired playing.It's Gallagher for people that don't like their rock and roll or blues too dirty.Then their is the live set. OH BOY!! Rory and his two band mates. Its loud and abrasive you feel Gallagher feeding off the crowd. This what we came to hear. You can almost see the sweat pouring off Rory as he plays.This is the real deal.Enjoy the studio cd but turn it up loud and strike your best air guitar poses as you play along with the live cd. There is no question why the man is revered. This is a great performance. A worthy addition to any Rory Gallagher fan's collection.

I've read "The man who changed my musical life was Rory Gallagher, I picked up a guitar because of him." Those words were delivered by none other than Smiths/Modest Mouse/The Cribs guitarist Johnny Marr, and a bevy of others have long been influenced by the Irish musician who has not always gotten his due since his passing in 1995. Gallagher's impeccable guitar work was both technically inspiring and emotionally captivating, qualities that are immediately apparent on "Notes From San Francisco". The 2-CD release features a never-before reissued studio album recorded back in 1978, as well as an unreleased 1979 concert from San Francisco. These unheard gems are classic Gallagher fare, with even familiar tracks like "Overnight Bag" taking on new life thanks to the guitarists' constantly transforming style and creative fills."If you enjoy great guitar riffs, this is the artist and offering that you shouldn't pass by. This album was scrapped back in 1978 by Gallagher and we should be pleased that it was resurrected for all to enjoy.Jimi Hendrix considered Gallagher as "The greatest guitarist of his time." Imagine what he could do if he was with us today.

This is a great return to the best of Rory Gallagher. While several of the songs on his unreleased album were released on later discs, it is nice to hear them in their original form. The other, newer material is Rory in his primo. But the real gem, is the live disc; which brings back the finest of Rory's on-stage revelry. He was dynamite live, and if you never saw him in person; this disc will give you a fine taste of his wonderful antics in front of an audience.

New Rory Released in 2011. Great Sound, and new songs. Studio recordings from 1977,that did not see the light of day untill 2011 . This is a gem and also has a 2nd CD that is live from 1979.Any Rory fan should be jumping up and down for this release. Good Price and great music. BUY THIS RIGHT NOW.

This was billed as the lost album before Photo Finish. I really enjoyed this cd and if you're a Rory fan you'll love it. The 2nd CD is live and as always is awesome. I don't really see it as a lost album as a number of these songs ended up on Photo Finish (PF). They seem more like transitions to me, or steps along the way, close to the finished product. What ended up on Photo Finish was superior IMO. He dropped the keyboards and went back to a trio, which seemed to really make a difference upon comparison. For some reason the keyboards and horns seem to be in the way on these recordings, again, IMO. For example, Brute Force and Ignorance has horns at the end and just doesn't measure up to the PF version. It's good, but not as good. Fuel to the Fire's final product on PF is more powerful than this version. Also, Overnight Bag is way different from PF and was included on the Crest of a Wave Best of CD but I prefer the louder mix from the Crest of a Wave. So, these songs are interesting to listen to but don't measure up to their finished product on Photo Finish, which is maybe why Rory canned them and moved on.

Endlich, das Album Torch! Das Büchlein (Booklet wäre hier eine Untertreibung) macht einen edlen Eindruck: Hardcover, dickes Papier, Texte in Rory's Handschrift, Studio-Notize, Bilder von Rory und den Bandmitgliedern, Postkarten und einen Aufkleber direkt auf dem Buch, damit man den nicht in mühevoller Arbeit von der Folie kratzen muß (sorry, als Fan habe ich sogar Preisaufkleber auf einigen LP's gelassen oder Quittungen aufgehoben, daher -> WICHTIG :-). Oja, und natürlich zwei CD's. Die beide Vorworte vom Studio-Eigentümer Elliot Mazer sowie vom Rory's Bruder sind sehr interessant und ehrlich. Rory wollte dieses Album nicht veröffentlichen, weil er sich nicht wohl dabei fühlte, weder mit der Ausführung der Songs noch mit seiner damaligen Band. Wer sich die Studio-Aufnahmen anhört, fragt sich wirklich was da wohl faul gewesen sein soll an diesen Songs. Es sollte ein 'American Recording' werden und da kann ich nur sagen: Ziel erreicht. Was Rory und seine Mitarbeiter da auf die Beine gestellt haben, ist ein Meisterwerk. Es grooved, fetzt, rockt, bietet Gänsehaut und Rory als Master of Ceremonies in Topform (Vergleiche mit der Band Little Feat dringen sich auf, nur rockiger und immer Rory). Ja, ich denke, das Album wäre Rory's Durchbruch als Superstar in Amerika gewesen. Hiernach wäre jedes neue Album ein Multi-Millionseller geworden, jedes Jahr eine Amerika-Tour durch die größten Stadien, hier und da eine Welt-Tour, Medien-Aufmerksamkeit soweit das Auge reicht usw. Und genau das wird der Knackpunkt gewesen sein. Rory war (und ist) einzigartig, ließ sich nicht zwingen, schon gar nicht von Plattenbossen, und wollte seine Visionen umsetzen können. Als Superstart ließe sich sowas nicht so leicht machen, hätte er unendlich Verpflichtungen und Termine die er nicht selbst beeinflüssen konnte. Das wäre sowas von Nicht-Rory gewesen. Wer so zu seinen Prinzipchen steht verdient ein großes Lob. Aber es tut weh, wenn man einen Song wie Wheels within Wheels hört und sich fragt, wie wäre es ihm ergangen wenn er über seinen Schatten gesprungen wäre ohne sich zu verkaufen, weiterhin doch seinen Weg gegangen wäre usw?Zu den Songs: einige sind ja auf das offizielle Album Photo Finish veröffentlich worden. Meiner Meinung nach sind die Ausführungen auf diesem Album besser (Ausnahme: Schräges Intro Fuel to the Fire), sie grooven einfach mehr.Die Live CD ist ein wahrer Bonus und der schrille Kontrast zu dem Studio-Album.Einziger Minuspunkt ist wie die CD's in dem Büchlein gepackt sind. Also, welcher Vollidiot (sorry, aber dafür gibt es keine Entschuldigung) läßt die CD's so einquetschen? Meine Live CD hat schon ein Kratzer weil ich die nur mit Gewalt aus der Hülle bekommen habe! Vielen Dank auch. Also, sofort ein 2-CD Hülle besorgen und separat zu dem Büchlein packen. Kein Grund zum Sternenabzug nur ein Appèl am gesunden Menschenverstand.Kaufen, freuen und trauern.
