I like the convenience of a skill saw for small changes and minor adjustments during installation and finishing, without having to use a larger heavier skill saw which can be cumbersome in tight situations.The saw design could be a little more rugged; plastic on the outside blade guard and pull back seems cheap, but it’s not an expensive saw.

Fast shipping, I got the saw in three days. I was in the middle of construction so that was awesome. I used my Makita 2 aH drill batteries, the smallest batteries that will fit this saw. The included rip fence Rule Guide was one of the reasons I got this saw. I was cutting cedar siding, moulding and trim for a chicken house. The ripping guide made easy work of cutting the trim to width. I had to Change batteries about 2/3 of the way through. Ripping boards is a real workout for any saw and this Makita cordless saw is up to that task. My old circular saw did not have a rip guide so I am really happy this one does. It will replace my table saw in some cases now. A saw that rips as many boards as I did certainly has no trouble with cross cuts but you have to remove the rip guide first. The saw is very quiet compared to my old skilsaw. The only problem I have with this saw is the blade is on the LH side rather than the RH side where it should be. WTH! Pretty hard to get used to using it safely and accurately. Not sure what possessed the Makita engineers to do this. If I was in charge of the company, heads would roll! Hey Makita, your reputation was built on solid design,. why do you want to throw that away? I suppose if you are Left handed you will be really happy but I don’t know how easy it will be to adapt. Update- it’s getting easier to handle this saw with practice. The 2ah battery works just fine but I have ordered 5 ah batteries so I can use my drill and impact driver at the same time as my saw..

I love this saw. I bought a couple of generic batteries to go with it, and it works great These saws are extremely well built, including the blade bearings that are extremely precise, so the saw tracks extremely well. The platform is also excellently made, cast and machined smooth on the bottom, instead of cheap stamped steel. I had a generic saw from a past cordless tool kit, and it was trash. This saw is now my main workhorse, I almost never use the old corded saw.The $100 more expensive Makita saws would be worth buying if you're actually a professional using the saw all day every day, because the pro saw has a brushless motor that would last better for years of all-day professional use (there is a real reason for that extra cost). But the rest of the features are fluff (blower, LED light, vacuum hookup, hanging hook). The core build quality of this budget saw is still superb, the same precision as the pro, there are no corners cut, it is pure top notch Makita quality, and it really does everything a home user can ever need. This is likely one of the best budget saws on the market, based on build quality over fluffy features (eg a red laser line that's crooked anyways).Verdict: this saw made the ideal companion to my existing 18V LXT drill and driver, I now have the ideal tool kit, and it looks like Makita is resisting the urge to change up another 2 volts every year, so the battery technology is stable, a safe investment in a top notch tool system.
